Howto: Build a Mac OS X x86 machine to run OS X natively

Posted in Howto, Tech by Dan at 2:04 pm

FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR FEED HERE

Using a motherboard with an Intel 915 chipset and a P4/Celeron D Processor, you can get OSX up and running natively. It’s FAST and is 100% compatible(sound, accelerated graphics, and networking). It also runs PowerPC Applications. This hardware can be obtained for around $100. This is a list for OSX x86 hardware compatibility.

Info is scattered all over so I compiled a list of working components that work in native mode (no Pear, or VMware).

If you have more, add it, IF it works completely. Please ONLY add the components and no questions, failures, etc.

We need a clear list of working components.

Fully working hardware list.
CPU SSE3
AMD 64 (venice)
Intel Prescot P4
Intel Celeron D

*SSE2 processors are not listed due to limited operation (certain apps will not work).

Most compatible motherboards
Will be updated on occasion
Audio, video, and chipset (no definate networking, but easy to fix with a cheap card)
Intel
No video (or definate networking)
Intel

AMD will be added later. Basically, it takes an expensive board and processor.

The cheap setup is Celeron D with a budget board, together, they can be had for about $110. The cheapest board does not show up in the search (as well as a few others, not sure why, I need to look into it). This BIOSTAR U8668 D, and the cheapest Celeron D processor you can find is the cheapest.
See this thread (thanks Macgirl).

If you own an ATI based VGA, you can easily install your VGA on Tiger X86 via simple bios update IMO (so this is my theory). But I’m not sure about boot issues on a PC motherboard… However, boot issues can be easily fixed using PCI card, and re-bios update.

    All you need is this file if you own a Radeon 9800pro with Samsung memory (maybe you can edit timings to use with other brand of memory) ;

    You can also find MAC compatible bioses for Radeon 9000, and 8500 in this page;

I’m running OS X on a system I threw together just for the project. It runs well on a 945 chipset with Pentium 630, with 512MB of DDR2 (dual channel; 2×256). It actually runs with a PCI-Express GeForce 6600, though graphics are slow, because the OS only sees a generic PCI card. I have tried many other graphics cards and interfaces, and it always sees a generic 16MB accelerator (even on different chipsets, and AMD machines). However, the 6600 is so fast that it brute-forces the system into the relm of usability. Rosetta pumped out 1.86 gigaflops–emulated PPC code!

Anyone try installing the deadmoo image on a Dell Dimension 2400? It’s an Intel Celeron D 2.4GHz processor, Intel 845GV chipset, and Integrated Intel Extreme 3D Graphics (82845G).

After much wrangling, I got the image bootable, but as soon as it gets to the login screen, it gets all wonky. The graphics are all but indecipherable. It drops to some sort of greyscale halftoning. I can barely make out the icons well enough to open System Preferences, then Display properties. I BELIEVE it says it’s in 800×600 at 256-color mode, but I can’t read the text well enough to swear to it. The mouse cursor disappears as soon as I click on one of the settings, only to be brought back by clicking on the menu at the top of the screen. Near as I can tell, it doesn’t believe any other video modes are available, and I can’t find any place to see what video hardware it thinks it’s using. It’s by far the most frustrating computing experience I’ve ever had! When I started in safe mode (-x), the initial greyscale apple screen comes up fine, but as soon as it brings up the login screen it’s all FUBAR’d again.

Since it seems to be designed with low-end hardware in mind (845 chipset, Celeron D), I’d think it would be able to handle the integrated graphics, too. Anyone have any insight?

I have the Asus AV8 Deluxe MB with 2G Ram and ATI 9800 AIW and AMD Atholn 64 - 3400. I believe the chipset is Via and Promise RAID controller. Can anyone help me to setup for OS X to run natively on my system? Thanks!

  7. xef6

    i have an MSI RS480M2-IL (s939) with an AMD64 3200+ Venice, 1GB PC3200 RAM, and a pci-e 6800GT

i did the dd install from windows, and everything booted fine
the GUI is slow as hell, but what can you expect from generic drivers?

also… the kernel is churning all the time, stealing all of my precious cycles

  8. Can I run this on a dual core system (Amd X2, or Intel EE 840?)

  9. Beats

yo Justin, I am on a 2400 also with a 2.66 P4. I am having the same problem as you. I found the problem here: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL#Dell_Dimension_2400

apparently the video card (haha) only gives 16 colors, so it’s not the chip or anything. and there’s no AGP slot. sux

@ justin, John, xef6, beats and the rest to come:
First you steal a non crap OS, then try to install it on hardware not meant to run it and THEN YOU´RE WHINNING ABOUT IT NOT RUNNING WELL.

plz, give me a break…………and go buy a Mac, if you want Tiger

  16. austin

I got all this working on a Pentium M laptop using the patches from Maxxuss off of osx86project.
I now have XP/OSX/FC4 booting via grub

My basic method was the one described by justin.
-Boot ubuntu and make a new PRIMARY (very important) partition with type af (using fdisk or cfdisk)
-boot windows and dd the deadmoo image to the new partition.
-Put the darwin bootloader on C:\ (lost the link)
    it’s called chain0
    -reboot and typed at grub:
    rootnoverify (hd0,1)
    chainloader +1
    boot

    and it works.
apply the patches and itunes will run under rosetta even

  17. carlos

How would I go about patching the system for enabling sse3 and rosetta? Just replacing “CoreGraphics”??? Ive tried to copy and paste it from withing osx, but that doesnt work. Let me know.

  18. MacNewbie

For the Dell Dimension guys. I had the same problem “crappy video” with 16 colors, but when I increased my video memory in bios to 8MB everything works fine. Let me know if that solves your problem.

  19. dasepsilon

is there any update on the hardware list?
especially ati-cards? i’d like to buy AMD
instead of intel, but am unsure of the
    compability…
    thanks in advance

Would I be able to use this processor to run natively? It has 64 bit support

  21. wrsiii

Got it working with my MSI 845PE Max2 (MS-6704) V2 updated with BIOS 3.2 to support 533FSB, Intel Pro 1000MT (Integrated),1GB PC3200 RAM 533 FSB, 2.8 GHZ P4 SSE2, DiamondMax 60GB ATA133 HD, CompUSA Radeon 9200 Sony Double Layer DVDR and Sony DVDROM both work, but sound does not. Video is responsive, but menus and dialog boxes flash green lines when colapsing or closing. Most included apps work, Safari quits whn loading certain pages. DVD Player does not start. PPC apps do not work because of SSE2 processor (mostly likely cause based on my reading so far). I was able to burn a DVD.

I am putting together a P4 3.0 Ghz 530J 800Mhz FSB LGA775 processor and TBD mainboard as an upgrade to my current system. I’ll test again and post. This is my backup PC. My primary system is a Quicksilver 2002 PowerMac G4 2X1Ghz with 1.5 GB RAM and lots of space running Tiger.

  23. JaVaBeAn

ok, I have the 915 chipset. which build should I load, the dev edition or the tiger-X86.img or another? I put the dev edition in and it boots up and then goes to blue screen and stays there forever. I have no activity that I can tell on HDD or DVD. any guidance?

  24. GreenBug

HP nx 7010 Laptop works fine. But rozetta dosen’t work. Safari quit’s by himself.

  25. jccool

i have a sse3 cpu …intel mother board D915GAV Pentium-4 3.4ghz and this is to say that soundblaster live USB works i have it up and running so spread word it only costs 49$ please this to your what works list …..

  26. Keith

Correction to the above list of working hardware… I have a Broadcom 5705 Wired Gigabit ethernet controller, and OSX does not recognize it in native mode… I’m hoping someone writes a driver for it soon, but for now it isnt working. If anyone has any further information about the Broadcom drivers, i’m sure I’m not the only one who would love to hear about it.

the bios for ati cards in macs are 128k and the ones for pc are 64k if anyone gets a mac bios flased to a pc bios rom and it works i want to see it(without taking the eeprom off the card and adding the 128k eeprom

  28. obskure

don’t flash your pc card to a mac card ie.using 9800 pro small rom file. It won’t work.

I have a flashed 9800 pro running in my mac I tried it in my pc running os x and the motherboard posted a “bad vga” message.

I think the pc roms and mac roms are ppc/x86 specific. bummer.

I have also tested a 9000 pro oem mac card. no luck.

  29. obskure

    Hey Jas,

The rom file I used for my 9800 pro was a reduced rom file (64) so I didn’t have to solder on a 128k eeprom.

Works great in my g4 powermac running Motion 2. Doesn’t work at all in my pc running os x(refer to above post).

  30. eliya

By native, you mean that you don’t need any patches or something(any patched version like the deadmoo image?)? you can install the dev kit as is?

  31. huggafat

I got it running on a P4 2.53, but my sound cards are not recognized Audigy 2, and onboard C-Media. Also netiher of my network cards are recognized D-Link DL-10050, onboard SIS-900. and finally no usb plug and play recognition

  32. Cow

Many people have said “I’ve installed the deadmoo image.” I haven’t found any but deadmoo. Are there?

  33. Gemici

celeron 2.0 suppert the mc os x?

  34. Tigah

Running as we speak on a Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 @ 3.0GHz, 512MB RAM, Asus P4P800. Can’t burn cds or dvds (I have a NEC 3500A), not sure if the onboard LAN is working as I haven’t tested it, but it didn’t work on the deluxe version so…Onboard sound working fine, no support for my soundblaster, though. Network detected and running on my 3COM Etherlink.

Patched the system with maxxuss files 0.4. PowerPc apps working, iTunes working like a charm, Safari works, firefox (pearpc build) works, MSN Messenger works and so on… Have random crashes on apps like QuickSilver, not sure what the problem is. Besides that, faster than my xp and so on.

  35. TheFighter

Do you think the following spec would work?

Im about to buy a new computer, which is going to be my computer for the next few years, and when I saw about the whole Mac Intel thing going on, I thought, Ive got to do that as well! I decided to change a few things to try and get it to work natively, and I want to know if you think it will work. Thanks

    Tech Spec:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Socket 939 Venice Core
Gigabyte K8VT890-9 or some ASUS motherboard
    Nvidia 6600 PCI-E
    1GB of DDR 3200

Anything else that needs to be ready to be compatible?

    Thanks

    TheFighter

  36. Blarg

Netgear GA311 NIC works fine on this

  37. Jake

    Austin and wrsiii:

Were you able to get the OS X ‘boot volume’ to a larger HD and fully use the space? As has been commented elsewhere, the ‘dd’ thing will turn the target drive into a disk identical to the image - 6 GB in size… Others have limited the primary partition to 6 or 7 GB, so then could create additional partitions on the HD.

I want a full use of the 12 GB HD for OS X, and boot from it. Any suggestions?

Here is my environment: Norwood 2.5 GHz; Via main board; Kingston Fast Ethernet card; nVidia 440 video. All functional with network and sound etc. The only thing I want to get to is to fully utilize the HD space for a single OS X partition.

    Thanks guys!

In a P4 530 over ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe Motherboard everything works, but the net and sound (only optical output appears). I installed realtek 8139 and have got every needed device working.

It is fast enough, but not blazing!!

  42. Nick

Im buying a couple of laptop’s at the moment and am wondering which new laptops run osx for sure? Can anyone help?

  43. mikel

have a questions guys did anybody try to put the OSX in a mobile computer or a portable? does it work, maybe in a week or so I will be able to answer this question but I was trying for a moral boost sorry for my english I am from Spain

  44. jojo

I have is running on Pentium 4 3.0GHz, 512MB RAM, Asus P4P800 Deluxe. Onboard 3com 3c940 Gbit PCI Lan not working, however my PCI Dlink 530tx+ rev D is working fine. My onboard sound ADI AD1985 is not working. Have not tried any other sound card yet. All osx programs are working fine except dvdplayer i get an error that it is missing a video driver. I used Viper’s ISO witch is a full install dvd os OSX 10.4.1 and sse2 is patched by default at the end of the install. As far as some have expressed about if you want tiger then get a mac, “Get a life” and I have a mac in fact I have two. Getting osx to work on a pc is just for fun for me.

  45. Cassie

As an FYI. The 945G chipset has full support (HD Audio, USB, P/SATA, GMA950, etc) if you edit kexts to put the device IDs in.

  46. jake

i noticed above two other people with the same problem, my copy runs in black and white, i have intel 845gv onboard graphics (64 mb). someone mentioned going into the bios and changing the amount of memory for the card, but i dont understand how to, help?

  47. jake

ugggh help please im sick of this gray scale, i really shouldnt complain being bootlegged an all huh?

    Sure, I would gladly do that, if I didn’t already have a legitimate full install of 10.4, 10.3, 10.2, a 1.5 Ghz Powerbook, a Dual 1 Ghz G4 Quicksilver, a 350Mhz G3 Blue & White tower overclocked to 450Mhz, and a 600Mhz G3 iBook.

But then again, you didn’t know that, now did you?
I fixed the slow GUI problem, even though i wasn’t really complaining about it in the first place. On an informative note, my x86 osx machine opens apps faster than the shared single 1.8Ghz G5 Powermac in my house, and my 1.5 Ghz Powerbook.

I’m writing this from Tiger running on my Dell Inspiron 5100. Took me a week of work, but finally is working satisfactory. (P4, 1Gb RAM, running on 4th partition 10GB size, and, yes, using the entire 10GB).
Have to follow the instruccions to get it run in VMWare. Use anoter VM to install Darwin on partition you want to run Tiger, no matter size. Then attach this partition to the Tiger VM, boot into Tiger, and do a restore from the virtual disk to the partition with darwin. Repaire permissions, and go boot to native.
I’m using XP boot loader, work fine for me, Have to type at the darwin boot “platform=X86PC|ACPI -x”, and this boot Tiger fine.

Hope this help you guys, and enjoy experimenting with Tiger!

  59. thomas

I got it running on a P4 2.53, but my sound cards are not recognized Audigy 2, and onboard C-Media. Also netiher of my network cards onboard SIS-900 BUT IT IS NOT ACTIVITE . and finally no usb plug and play recognition , HOW CAN I DO TO SOLVITE IT .

  60. xarizmat

I don’t know about hardware incompatibilities, or your problems with booting. I downloaded DEADMOO’s VMWare image, and used [http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite/dd.htm] - DD for windows utility to write the .img file to my disk. all hardware supported, and running great. at the moment, i am running mac os x86 tiger off of a U.S.B. Hard Drive… No Problems!!! I will post the How To for usb OSX later on the forum.

    P.S.
OS X on PC is still a very unstable os if you do not have windows… perhaps when it is finished, and mac converts to X86, then it would be quite usable. There is still very little software for X86 platform OSX.

  61. gomph

Tiger is working in my PC very well. My equipment is P5GDC Deluxe, 1Gb DDR ram, P4 3 GHz, HD SATA Maxtor, Asus EN6600GT.The used system of installation is patching ISO DVD Deloper.Affluent sound from the first moment. I have had to install an Ethernet PCI SMC, to have net. But my only problem to solve is the acceleration 3D.

    Somebody has solved this problem?

    Thx.

  62. Pablo

Got Tiger up and running from the “deadmoo” image. Abit VT7, P4 Prescott 2.8 800 1mb cache, 1gb ram. System runs great after restoring the original kernel and coregraphics library (SSE3 Baby!). Net connection is via Intel Pro 1000 XT pci nic. Onboard sound works, but only through the left channel.. any ideas on this?

I am not looking for lowest priced x86 mac os X 10.4 capable computer. I am trying to built a good looking value computer
that I will continue to use windows. I am looking for HW that I can do a native install
and the software will be as stable as the developer models.
Do I need a graphic card or should I use the on board graphics card?

Will all these components work with the lastest developers release? Any other suggestions?

Dude, that CPU is crap. Get one with 800 MHz FSB, so you can get HT. I have the 650, but a 630 should be a good value.

  65. rdL?

Just thought I would add that DEC 2114x-based network cards work under OS X. I have two OS X (86) machines running in my house on a network. I’m using this because, it works well, and I’m getting my mom used to OS X, so that maybe I’ll end up seeing more Apple computers show up in this house.

  66. whte_rbt

Anyone tried to do it with a SiS 651 chipset?

  70. IMre

Hi all. I installed the VMWare image but it does not really seem to work. It starts, but just runs the CPU at 100% continuously and each click result takes long-long minutes to appear. Any idea?

  71. Tommy

    Hi,
I booted with SuSE Live DVD and have done “dd bs=1048576 if=./tiger-x86-flat.img of=/dev/hda” on my Gateway M505 with Pentium M 1.5 Ghz, 2GB RAM, ATI Mobility Raedon 9600, HD on /dev/hda.
i stucked while booting Tiger at gray Apple Screen overnight.
    tried -x, not help.

Please help, really wanna try it so bad :).

  72. Fred

Running Awesome. On a P4 3.2Prescott, 1GB Kingston HyperX on an Intel D875PBZ mobo. Insalled natively onto a WD Raptor. Forced 1280×1024 resolution with 32 million colors @85Hz via boot option on a Radeon 9800 pro. Patched to 10.4.3. All included apps run fine.

  73. Dennis

i got an amd 64 3400 with 768mb ram, but i also have a p4 2.8ghz with 768 ram i cant run the mac osx on the amd can i cuz i would think itd be much faster

    …..

  74. Fred, How much did your hardware cost? Where can it be bought?

  75. Robby

    Hi Tommy
1.Had the same problem, in my case it was quite silly :-)
I used an old hdd I had laying around: No jumper! The jumper has to be there and it has to be set to “Master”, otherwise it gets stuck: “wating for boot device” (-v)
    2. Hi Pablo..same thing, sound only left channel…anybody any ideas?

  76. IntoCRASH

I installed the 8f1111 version on my AMD Athlon 64 2800+ with 1.5GB ram, where everything works like a charm no far, except for the Delta 1010LT Audio. I do have an ATI 9200 Card and i was getting an error at the begining, but i entered in safe mode (-x) and downloaded the driver update for mac 10.2.0 or later and now the kernel is recognizing my display card.

If anynone has an idea on making my Envy24 or Delta1010LT Audio card working please let me know.
    Thanks.

  77. K0

Does anyone know if OSx86 will run M$Office over rosetta?

  78. cooper

    thanks a lot. it runs!

  79. dream_theatre

Got a AMD Athlon 64 3700+ processor (939 w/SSE3), Asus Av8 mobo with the kt8t800 pro chipset and a AGP radeon X700 pro, 1GB of DDR
PC 3200. would OSX run on my system?

  80. xtraa

Well, yes. You can verify that in the compatibility list of the wiki of osx86project.org: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.4.3#Motherboards

Use my installation guide to install it NATIVE via VMWare if it wont boot for install:

    http://www.win2osx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1689&highlight=xtraa

good luck. install may be hard and nasty, but it is worth it :)

  81. Extingwisha

    “Sure, I would gladly do that, if I didn’t already have a legitimate full install of 10.4, 10.3, 10.2, a 1.5 Ghz Powerbook, a Dual 1 Ghz G4 Quicksilver, a 350Mhz G3 Blue & White tower overclocked to 450Mhz, and a 600Mhz G3 iBook.

But then again, you didn’t know that, now did you?
I fixed the slow GUI problem, even though i wasn’t really complaining about it in the first place. On an informative note, my x86 osx machine opens apps faster than the shared single 1.8Ghz G5 Powermac in my house, and my 1.5 Ghz Powerbook.”

This is what ive been trying to find out, is its faster than a ‘real’ mac? I’ve got a 1.2 G4 iBook and a old skool b&w G3 i assumed OSx86 would run at snails pace a intel/amd hardware.
Any one know if its worth me buying a Beige Box in terms of speed? and graphics?

Built a Celeron 2.3 on a Matsonic MS9127C mobo. 1.25 Gig Ram (Pc2700), Intel 100 + Nic card, XGI V3 128 Meg PCI video, DVD Burner (BenQ), CD Burner (Lite On) and it just works! Dual boot either OS X 10.4.1 or XP Pro, Rosetta works with SSE2 patch, no speed issues at all, ITunes works, sound is there using CMedia (true) USB speakers! Video looks better than XP and plays MPEG4 rips flawlessly. Only thing that doessn’t work is DVD player.
Anyone know a workaround, or a 3rd party app that will fix the DVD playback?

  84. Lars Schöning

My system is running perfectly appart from mouse and keyboard support which is somehow missing, got an 848P-A PIV, (Elitegroup), does anybody have a clue to get that working?

  85. Prestonx86

OK so here’s the deal, I installed x86 on my AMD sempron 3200. Everything is working fine except my Network card. I am stuck and don’t know what to do now, Is it a problem where i simply need to buy a new NIC or something more??? Thanks for the help.

I ran it fine with a amd 64 4000+ sandy, epox agp mobo w/6800GT, was stuck at 1024×768 on a 19″ widescreen, bugs the hell outa me

  87. slosh

can this be run on a dell 9300?

  88. xn

Hack OS X works out of the box in Turion64 laptops with core Lancaster, which has full SSE3 support (I’ve seen in thousands of pages that it only works on AMD64 with core venice). The performance in my computer is really amazing, it tooks only 0,5-0,2 seconds to start safari/finder/TextEdit/iPhoto, so it beats a real mac for sure (Not going to say anything about linux)

  89. Locust43

I have OS X Natively on my Gateway 7422GX, on a Arima Motherboard, AMD64 Mobile Athlon 3400+ processor at 2.2Ghz out of the box. LOL I did it just by burning a file onto a DVD and patching it and installing it by turningoff w/ cd in drive and turning laptop on.

  90. Anon

Installed the 10.4.4/5 “We stole it” DVD on a Dell 280 in just over an hour (including nabbing the machine from someones desk, shoving in another SATA drive, and installing an old intel ethernet card.

Everything worked… it was just as easy as installing OSX on a PPC Mac.

  91. Geoff

Hey, this is really interesting…I have a Dimension 4500, do you think majority of hardware would be supported? I have a 64 mb Geforce MX400 too. Also, how hard of a hack would it be to get my linksys wireless pci card working? Wireless work at all on x86 os x?

  92. w8n4pizza

    euprhas,
No one is whinning here, looks to me like they are discussing successes and failures and trying to help dissolve division between one excellent OS and some non over-priced hardware. Why don’t you post your arrogant comments in an apple blog so the rest of you elitists can pat each other on the backs for coming up with such a clever comments?
    - a mac user

  93. mattc

i installed the 10.4.4 (westoleit) dvd on a vanilla compaq presario s5300 (P4, 512 RAM) and booted up safari and went to /. haven’t gone back to check the sound, but props to all who contributed the 10.4.4 image. no glitches, no hitches. maybe this apple thing will work out after all.

now, i want to build a box for home. i’ve seen the list on 0sx85 wiki for the hardware compatability. does anyone have a list of mobos that work for all (10.4.3, 10.4.4, 10.4.5) mixes? I’m hoping to have a system that will be upgradeable to 10.4.6 if that ever happens.

  94. noob

Well heres a easy no mess with windows for repeat testing on different machines running windows! (eg if a mate wants to test it out without losing anything)
this will make it easier for future mods and/or tests.

    Tools
*norton ghost 2003 or similar product
    *Partition magic or similar
    *smart boot manager floppy
    *spare harddrive for the setup

Right first follow general guides to write the deadmoo image to a harddrive, I used the windows way with dd.exe.
dd.exe can only see physical disks not the partitions on them hence the use of a spare hhd. (could probly copy to a specific Primary partition via a Live linux CD but I not use it much) I dont exclude the beginning sectors of the deadmoo image as I want to boot this disk/partition eventually

Once clone is performed, swap drives around so can be booted and is a working desktop change/create/delete root and user profiles and passwords to suit then once happy with setup, shutdown.

using norton 2k3 create a image from this disk via norton2k3 cd on boot
and create image file to windows partition or other network or usb drive

Put hhds back to original positions ide0 ide1 etc boot windows and you should see the ghost image you created where ever you saved it. all the hard work is done, now this will be easier to test on future machines or trials

On any compatible OSx86 computer use partition magic to create a another/second “primary” partition (not Logical!) of at least 6gig on any disk setup u may have and it doesnt have to be on the same harddrive the windows partition is on, eg: it could be on your spare 200gig drive on ide1, then ghost that OSx86 image you made to the partition you have created and there is no boot ini to edit or grub loader to install as I use *Smart Boot Manager 3.7.1, this program creates a boot floppy that on boot up, scans all drives and partitions and allows you to select which device to boot from. (good for real old comps that cant boot to a live linux cd)

Reboot With Smart Boot Manager floppy in a:\ select the unknown partition. When booting OSx86 the darwin loader will detect windows so you must enter startup options to select OSx86 to continue booting otherwise it will boot windows after the countdown as the windows partition is usually first in line in the partition table and so is first in line to boot..

For the critics out there.. remember this is to repeat installs of OSx86 using a windows occupied computer with one harddrive (or more) in ten minutes or less each time instead of having to use wmi tools and dd.exe everytime and risk picking the wrong destination drive as a result and have no after affects to the mbr as most dual booting can do when removing a trial OS

goes out and buys a mac…

    NOT

silly mac are for dummies, everyone knows that.

  96. Here’s my custom built computer for 100% compatibility with OSX86 all the way to 10.4.5:

    Motherboard Intel D915GLVGL
    Processor Intel P4 S775 630 HT 3.0GHz FSB800 2MB Cache
    Memory DDR400 1GB (2×512) CORSAIR Value Select
Harddrive HD ATA 300GB WESTERN DIGITAL - 8MB
DVD LG GSA 4167B Dual Layer

Hard drive could have been SATA but so what?
Graphics card is the integrated GMA900 which is 100% foolproof, and you can later add an ATI X1600 PCI for full glory.
The processor is fast enough to rule over any current dual-core iMac or BookPro.
I also bought a Goldship silver case that looks just like the G5 tower case… drool. A quick glance and anyone might think it is an actual G5! Unfortunately my LCD monitor and mouse/keyboard are black and is a certain giveaway.

  97. Thomas Brook

Is there a cheap Dell, or other off-the-shelf desktop and/or laptop I can run OS X?
Has anybody done this successfully? Which version of OS X did you run?

If anyone knows, please contact me at alienhairdo@yahoo.com

    Thomas

  98. Thomas Brook

Or is there anyone here who could build me a Mac ?

  99. Lord Grahf

Ok guys heres the deal, Im not that experienced with Mac OS, So forgive my lack of knowlegde.

Now I first did an install of OS X86 10.4.3 using VMWARE…everything worked great..of course the speed was
slow as crap. But still everything worked. I used my friend’s dvd burner to make a copy of the patched ISO so i can install it on its own separate drive. I had no problems installing it what so ever!

Everything worked great…fast boot up, sound, NIC..everything…except my display. Everything is in black and white. and the resolution is just wrong. Ive seen this problem around the forums alot. Some people have seem to have gotten this problem fixed. Ive read some of the tips on how to fix this but its just not working for me.

I really want to get this fixed, so is there anybody out there that can help me with this problem, I also have a copy of OS X86 10.4.4, would that make it make a difference if I installed that instead?

    Here are my computer specs

Dell Deminsion (cant remember what model number)
    Intel ® Celeron ® CPU 2.40Ghz SSE2
    Broadcom 440x 10/100 Intergrated Controller
    Intel ® 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem
    SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio
    Creative AudioPCI (ES137, ES1373) (WDM)
    Intel® 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

Hopefully this is enough info for whoever can help me out..

    Thanks in advance!

  100. Jason

    i have a 100 % Mac OS X 86 Native PC w00t. but i didn’t install it.

  101. Jason

    my computer specs:

    Intel Celeron D @ 2.40 ghz (with SSE3)
    intel 845 chipset
    intel pro 10/100 Network card
    SoundMAX integrated audio
Intel onboard graphics @ 96 mb

@Lord Grahf. your specs look fine. you’ll run mac os x natively. expecpt. your processor is SSE2 which cannot run powerpc applications such as iTunes.

  102. boxboy

    My specs:
    AMD 64 (venice core) 3000+
    nVidia nforce 4 mainboard
    nVidia 6600GT PCI-Ex16

Hmm…. I heard that it was impossible to use an nVidia card as the Mac’s use ATI 9200’s, I put a hard drive I got from someone in my box to see if it would work before I went through the whole native install and it ran fine, however I have come to install darwin and it seems to have a problem with my OHCI (usb 2.0 i think) and just sits there and periodically says “Still waiting for root device” any ideas?

  103. Jason

yea. what version of the mac did u install?? 10.4.1. if it’s 10.4.1 then it has no drivers on USBS 2.0. get mac 10.4.5 DVD from torrent sites. bootable too. and it has alot of drivers. so u should do that with the 10.4.5 DVD

  104. Lord Grahf

lol…funny thing is..i actually can run itunes!! of course i still cant see a darn thing but..it works! Im still working with my display issue though…its getting really frustrating..

  105. Gary

I’ve a Dell Inspiron 1200 Laptop. I got OSX to install, but not to run. That is, I could not reboot successfully into OS X. The Inspiron has a 1.3 GIG Celeron CPU. Could that be the issue? Not enough horsepower?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Gary

  106. Drogon

Gary, odds are the Celeron that you have lacks SSE3 or SSE2 support. That would be why it failed. I tried the same thing on my Aunt’s laptop (same model) and my patched install disk wouldn’t get past boot-up.

  107. SimpleSimon

    BooHoo…

My new PC just doesn’t like OSX. If I don’t start in safe mode I get a message saying that I need to restart my computer.

    Specs:

    - DFI LanParty UT nForce4 Ultra D mainboard
    - 512meg DDR533 memory

well it does look like you can. opteron i’m not sure it has sse 2 or sse 3…PROUD TO SAY.I’M ON NATIVE X86 INSTALL OF MAC OS

  109. Jason Mac X86

I have Mac OS X 10.4.4 patched running native on my 2.2ghz Athlon 64 Clawhammer (No SSE3).
Everything seems to work OK except my built in network card is recognized but it ALWAYS says a network cable is unplugged and never gets conectivity. I downloaded some drivers from the internet for USB ethernet adapters and my USB ethernet adapter works great! Also I have a Geforce4 MX420 AGP Video card and it doesn’t seem to be supported although I downloaded some drivers for it from macvidia. iTunes full screen visualizer won’t work - it just turns the visualizer off when I choose full screen. Can’t get to iTunes preferences.
X doesn’t support my SATA RAID so I’m installed on a secondary IDE drive partitioned half and half with a HFS and FAT32 so I can swap files between Win & Mac.
Does anyone know how I can get higher screen resolutions than 1024×768? Any help for my other issues?

    Dear Thomas:

I am running Mac OS X 10.4.1 on my Dell Laptop 1150 using Deadmoo’s image and DD Utility. I could not install 10.4.3 or higher because the OS did not support my chipset.

I have also installed Mac OS X 10.4.3 thru 10.4.5 on Dell Optiplex 170L, GX-260 and GX-270 natively using DVD-ROM. All I had to do was make an adjustment in BIOS to use more Graphics Memory.

    –daniel =)

    ———-
    Dell Inspiron 1150
    Mac OSx86 10.4.1
    Intel 82855 Graphics
    512MB Memory
    40 GB Hard Drive
    Broadcom 1350 Wireless

  111. Anthony

I’m sure that I’m only showing my ignorance by asking this, but how would you go about adjusting BIOS to use more Graphics Memory. I managed to use the DD Utility successfully, but the colors on the screen are distorted when I run OS X and I think this could fix it if anyone could tell me how it is done.

  112. Daniel

    Dear Anthony:

Here’s the trick: Some computers allow adjusting the Graphics Memory while others do not.

If you are using Dell Computer, keep tapping the [F2] while the computer is first turned on. This will get you into Setup BIOS. If you scroll through the options, you may have an option the adjust the Graphics Memory.

I was able to adjust the Graphics Memory on Dell Optiplex 170L, GX-260 and GX-270. I was not able to adjust on Dell Inspiron 1150 because there was no option to do so.

    –daniel =)

I have an acer aspire 1802 laptop p4 3.00gh 80gb ati x600 and i would like to find out if it is possible to run mac osx. also can you give me the link to download it. thanx from greece

  115. zorpnic

I’m running an AMD-64 3500+, 320 GB hard drive with an 80 GB backup that could be used for surplus OSes. I’m interested in being a test dummy for anything that can be wrought as far as troubleshooting and heavy testing on the MAC OS X86 front goes. I’m running a Radeon 9800 Pro and using the Audigy 4 Pro card with 1 GB PC3200. The VM shell has got along with my computer as of thus far, so the complaints are at a minimum. I’ve got a couple of backup copies of MAC OSX. 10.4.3 and 10.4.5. I get kernel panics at even before I start, and I don’t want to basic or hexkey my way into getting things to run, as that nukes brain cells needed for staying sane and healthy right now. ;) So far, Deadmoo’s copy has been the only one that worked. I mean, if Gentoo Linux works on an NTFS drive scale, why wouldn’t the MAC based OS format work with my other drive sets? Got an answer, email me at zorpnic@gmail.com

Who knows? Maybe overnight we can topple the Gates of Doom.

  116. J

Guys - just BUY the MAC HARDWARE ALREADY!!!!

  117. Dan

Is it possible to run this on a P4 Hyper threading processor

  118. zoli

so…no os x on raid(0) array..? sataII compatible?
will os x work with data on other partitions on disc with windows on C: ?

  119. Hi,

Just a qestion, to be sure, by “running natively” you mean that a PC with Intel 915 shipset, Intel G900 video adaper and an appropriate CPU (SSE2, SSE3) Mac OS X x86 will install (boot with the official DVD) an run without any patching ?

    Thanks and regards.

    Constant

  120. Sandeep

i have an intel d845gebv2 motherboard with o 2.4 ghz 512 mb ram will i be able to run max os x 10.4.1

  121. Squish

Anybody know where i can get part 8 of the iso so i can install osX..?

  122. @ Constant

You need patching regardless because your PC won’t have that nasty TPM chip which provides hardware locking mecanism. The patch simply avoids the TPM chip checks. Other than that, you won’t need any further patching if your CPU has SSE3.

    Here’s food for thought:

The setup below costs around $500

    Motherboard Intel D915GLVGL
    Processor Intel P4 S775 630 HT 3.0GHz FSB800 2MB Cache
    Memory DDR400 1GB (2512) CORSAIR Value Select
Harddrive HD ATA 300GB WESTERN DIGITAL - 8MB
DVD LG GSA 4167B Dual Layer
    Tower case with power supply
    Good silent CPU Fan

So while it definitely beats a Mac Mini Intel Duo in all specs, the cost benefit is not entirely there. I did it as a hobby. And yes, I’ll be getting a real Mac Intel as well.

  123. @troisd

Thanks, this make it more clear to me.
Even if I will also get a MacIntel, as you it’s for fun.

    Regards,

    Constant

I appreciate everyone keeping this alive, there is a good Jas 10.4.6 disk on the Demonoid that benches at 105-110 Disk access, Same as Quad G5.

it runs like a champ, but the QE needs to be patched from an earlier disk.

This disk runs natively off Intel Dual Xeon w/ 2 gigs RAM and 128 mb Nvidia graphics

And Natively means “STF-WA” “Stick it the fuck in and walk away”

does anyone know if the SiS 661FX/964 chipset will work with osx?
if not, what drivers would i need (or what replacement grafix card (i really dont care if sound works, i can work that out on my own.)

…..all i really want is to have mac boot up and be semi-usable…….

Will this work on a laptop like the compaq presario V5000T with Intel core duo processors? Site says graphics card is Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950 - Celeron. Not sure if it can be swapped out. Except for the mac powerbook g4, I think that the mac laptops are ugly so I’m reviewing options…including pc 12″ options.

———yes, it should work if you have a laptop that came with a core duo and has an intel chipset (any intel chip 815 and up should work.)

I’m having trouble getting into the usb hard drive directory through terminal. I typed in /dev/media/USB-HDD and I get error messages. “Bad directory or file name” or something like that. I ls it and it says Desktop. Anyone know what is wrong?

I have a custom built pc with an AMD athlon 64 2800+, 80gb hdd, 1gb corsair pc3200 ram, saphire radeon 9800pro video card(AGP) and my motherboard is a gigabyte K8Triton. can my system run the Mac OSX natively with the 64bit mac OSX?

  139. Mac

    To howtheheck….

    try cd /Volumes
    ls

and then find the USB-HDD from there.

For wireless, I am using a wusb54g by linksys, but you must go to Ralink site at the url http://www.ralinktech.com, and download the driver for RT71WUSB and install it with the adapter unplugged, reboot, then plug in the adapter, and it will recognize it, connect to your network with the wirelessusbutility that comes up, then enter system preferences and select the wireless connection, click apply, and voila!

I am using a Dell Dimension 4600c desktop with os x natively, it all works fine with the maxxuss prepatched os x 10.4.5 DVD.

I own one of the first Macbook Pros, and love it. If you get this to work on a pc, and you like it, I seriously suggest a real mac….a mac mini with core duo is cheap, and the experience is so much better with all of the other software that goes with the mac hardware.

    Enjoy, and best of luck

Well, I’ve too been trying to get Mac OS X on my PC, but I’ve been running into a hell of a lot of trouble.

I seem to be able to install the OS, but it hangs after it installs, and I can’t click the reboot button. Or if I have the installation show the all text so I can check for errors (or maybe, for some odd reason, when I install an upgrade copy over the original), it’ll get past the reboot button, but it will never actually reboot (just exit to a text prompt).

So I do a forced restart, and then after that it seems that the partition is unbootable. I’ve tried a couple different boot managers as well as just booting directly to the OS X partition. I get no installation errors, and I’m pretty sure I’m installing all the right patches (the default patches for Intel and AMD, and the AMD patches for SSE2). I’ve even tried it with SSE3 for the hell of it, and it makes no difference.

Could the forced reboot be killing it that much?

And would installing X11 be causing problems?

    My specs:
    Athlon 64 2800+
    nforce 3 motherboard
    1GB DDR400 memory (crappy brands)
    2 x 200GB Seagate 7200RPM 8mb cache Ultra ATA/100 hard drives
    ATI Radeon X850xt 128MB
    Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
    16x DL DVD+/-R/RW
    8x DVD+R/RW
    Generic floppy drive
1 USB card and 1 Firewire card (not that those should make a difference)

  141. Nick

Also, is nforce 3 simply an incompatible chipset?

And sorry if my grammar is a little lax, I haven’t been getting much sleep lately.

  142. David

I have been looking into installing OS X on my PC recently.
Right now, I’m running a dual boot gentoo/xp system using grub.
    Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.2GHz processor
1GB RAM, i forgot what kind. Pretty sure its PC2700 or PC3200.
    2 x 160GB Western Digital 7200RPM IDE hard drives
ATI RADEON X850 Pro AGP 8X/4X 256MB video card
forgot what sound card. i think its a Realtek AC-97.
    NEC DVD+/-R/RW, either 16x or 32x.
lets see…the usual stuff. keyborad and mouse wont make a difference.
    neither will printer.
oh yeah, a memory super drive on the front (USB/SD/MMC/SM/MS/MS-PRO/CF/MICRODRIVE)
but i doubt that makes a difference.

With this setup, is it possible?
Everyone is talking about Intel with OS X.
And if they do discuss AMD, which is rare, it is all a discussion of AMD64.

    Thanks.

  143. Hi All - I have all the hardware ready, and years of Linux and Solaris behind me ( and 40 earth years ) but either I am becoming dreadfully stupid, or i am doing somehting wrong… where … where does one get a copy of the deadmoo image for “evaluation” ? Sorry if this is a blisteringly stupid question - been ‘looking’ for 5 days now …

  162. For all the pain and hassle you could just buy a macmini for the same or slightly more and have everything work out of the box and be assured that you will be able to use any upgrades / future software without problems. If you’re just into playing around with this sort of thing, then that’s cool. The idea that Apple hardware is overpriced is no longer true. If you want a cheap os that isn’t windows to run on your pc then use linux. Open source is a great thing and current linux distro’s are pretty fantastic. If you want the best of all worlds get a mac -you can run any/multiple os’s you want on it. If you want the best OS and hardware get a pro line mac.
    Think Different
