Howto: Install OSX Tiger on Intel Machines (USB Drives) Using Only Windows Software

Posted in Howto, Tech by Dan at 12:34 am

FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR FEED HERE

The folks at Tech-Recipes have come up with a method to install OS X on a Intel machine using Windows, instead of the somewhat complicated Linux method.

Also, thank you Davak for pointing out where this article came from, unlike the original submitter.

  1. I’m waiting for a way to install osx without using a usbdrive
    Cos I have none

  2. Bigadeal

    I haven’t anyone mention a Transmeta Crusoe Processor……Cuz I have a Vaio C1VE that’s why.

Any tips or I can just forget about it.

  3. When I first start up dd.exe within the Forensic Acquisition Utilities, I get the following message:

    Copying CONIN$ to CONOUT$…

Then when I try to input the command “dd if=c:\tiger-x86-flat.img of=\\.\PhysicalDrive1″ (without the quotes of course), I get this message in return:

    F:\dd.exe:
    CONIN$ : Bad file descriptor

If anyone can tell me what’s going on it would be greatly appreciated =D thanks!

  4. Dan

Skip getting WMI and just use dd.exe –list to get the associations

  5. James

What size should tiger-x86-flat.img be? 2,146,942,976 bytes?

  6. James

Nevermind, figured it out. You need WinRAR 3.3 and above to extract the files, 3.2 and below don’t work.

  7. What size is the final install? How big of a thumb drive would I need?

  8. James

You CAN’T install it on a THUMB DRIVE. You need an external HARD DRIVE.

  9. brad

i am having the same error as above..(bad file descriptor) can anyone help?

  10. Freakie Styler

so… i got it working and it is GREAT!!! but… I think the version that i downloaded has patched out support for sse3 thus no itunes and no rosetta. Anyone know what needs to happen to fix this?

  11. nitzan

Well, I’ve managed to create the drive with the mac osx x86 on a usb drive. got into the bios, set boot –> from usb drive and restarted.

got the mac os boot loader, with option to load the os, but tring to hit enter - returned me to the boot screen, trying to use the -v option didnt helped much and the -x did the same - i couldn’t reboot into the tiger.

anyone else with this problem? anyone have a solution?

  12. FC

I have yet to get this to work as well. I have been having the same “Bad File Descriptor” Error as well

  13. brands

after i dd to usb harddisk, and boot from it, it shows “operating system not found”… anyone have any idea?

  14. brsseb

Got no drives aviable, but i got an ipod 20GB lying around. Having a pirateed OSX on an ipod would be somewhat ironic, wouldnt it..?

  15. Burgertime

What kind of specs are people running? Would would a reasonable target CPU speed be? Of course faster is better, but can I get away with 2ghz or so? And how does this handle other hardware. eg. Video Cards and so.. ??

  16. Hey I also installed it on a spare drive.. using the windows tools .. when I booted from drive 2, I get the operating system not found as well… is this just for usb hd’s ?

  17. psiko_scweek

doing this now, wish me luck.

  18. psiko_scweek

alright, this method does work. i had it running on a 1.6ghz Pentium 4, with 1gb ram. it ran a bit slow and it didnt have the drivers for my Voodoo4(yeah its old) so it wasnt very usable. im going to try with an ATI Radeon im getting from a friend later tonite.

  19. psiko_scweek

if it helps any i used a spare IDE 6 gig hard drive that i had laying around. i havent tested on a USB drive yet. ill try that later if i can.
    ~psiko

  20. Bifgut

its installing now… should i disconnect my other harddrive? in bios can i chose which one i wnat? thx

  21. Kilrah

I have a Pentium M laptop, just copied the image on an external 20Gb 2.5″ HD. I’ve tried running it in vmware and native by swapping the HD with my internal one. With both methods i get a “Error parsing plist fileLoading Darwin/x86″ from the bootloader. My friend who gave me the image has the same one. Could this be a bad image? Thanks

  22. Ancorp

Well I followed the instructions, no problems what so ever to install, installed on a second drive, a 10gig IDE. Gets to the boot screen, than says something like you need to reboot, please press restart or power for five seconds. Its says that in 4 languages, the screen is all yellow. Restarting causes the same thing to happen over and over again. With the -v extention, I get a black screen that shows everything thats happening (safe mode), but it gets stuck at one point, something to do with video I think…

    Anyone else with this problem?

    Thanks!
    Cheers,
    Ancorp

  23. Davy

    Guys,
I did as I read above. I get this error:
Error opening output file: 2 The system cannot find the file specified.

Now the tiger-86-flat.img is located at c:\ and yet it cannot find it, am i doing somehting wrong here, please advice

  24. Davy

Ok I was wrong, I was giving the wrong Physicaldrive, it was 1 and i was typing 2,the command is hanged as said-I hope it’s installing, i can see my hard disk light flickering away.
If i get sucess, i will boot into mac os x and then type from safari, till then keeping fingers crossed.

  25. Tabha

So how do u know when its done?
it been like 1 hour now, it just like there the thing is blinking.

  26. Tabha

Well im looking at the Task Manager in the Performance tab, and im guessing when its done the cpu is going to go to 0% usage at idle, while as at idle now it is gose from 15-10% is this a good way to measure when its done?
    -Tabha

  27. Joker

After using dd.exe in WinXP, I’m getting the same error on boot as the guy above who posted his comment on 8/16 @ 1:44pm. Error is “Error parsing plist fileLoading Darwin/x86″. I have tried several times, both on native machine and in VMWare 5.0 and I’m getting the same result consistently. Anyone else getting this? More importantly, did anyone who got this resolve the problem? Thx.

  28. Paulo Ricardo

i can install the osx intel in two hd’s on raid 0?

  29. Spencer

My tiger-x86-flat.img have 5,99 GB (6.441.910.272 bytes) its correct?

  30. Spencer

WORKS!!!! Perfect on my Dell Dimension 4700 - 2 SATA hard disks, takes 5 min to load image.

  31. Congratulations, man!! i’m downloading te img file to follow the procces. hope works for me.

  32. obskure

I’ve tried two methods so far.

    1. using Disc Utility and Carbon Copy Cloner after mounting tiger-x86.img. Put it in my PC and nada.

    2. using the PC only method stated here. Went through the entire process, no problem. stick it to boot and get a disc error message.

The drive is formatted HFS+. If I put it back in my mac and verify disc using disc utility everything looks fine, all the files are there.

My system is an x2 4400 proc, asus a8v mobo and 6800 ultra video with ATA 133 hd’s and 2 gig ddr400.

I must be doing something wrong.

How far do you think the core video drivers are away for nvidia and ati cards?

Has anybody tried flashing a PC video card to a Mac card and seeing if there are native drivers for that card already in the dev release?

  33. Hoppy

    I did this

    dd bs=8M if=c:\tiger-x86-flat.img of=\.\\f: –progress

if will finish ok but when I boot I get a HFS+ Partition Error

Am using an 8Gb HDD … anyone got any idea ?

  34. Well, I got the image 5.35gb in full. Just realised my usb hdd is 4.75gb :(

    Any ideas?

  35. Dave

Has anyone tried this on a Dell Dimension (4300)? There doesn’t seem to be any option to boot from a USB external hard drive (bios a06). Is there any way out of this, other than bying another internal hard drive or erasing the current one.

  36. zMeJ

  37. Brad

For those of you who are having the “CONIN$ : Bad file descriptor” error, you need to run DD from dos. Thus, put dd.exe in your root folder (usually C) and the click start | run | type “cmd” | cd c:\ (to get back to the root folder) and then | dd.exe
you should be fine from there. Also, I used the dd.exe file available from http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite/dd.htm, apparently this one is simpler to use because it’s only one file, not three different folders w/ the same exe. Hope this helps!
    -Brad

  38. zMeJ

    Thx =)

  39. miyagi

Thanks, it’s working! Only my wireless card doesn’t work.
    My system:
IBM thinkpad , Pentium M 1300, 1GB Ram, Harddrive in
    Ultrabay

  40. Dave

Got the install to work, but I have a problem with it hanging on the Mac boot screen. Tried using the -x command to boot in safe mode, but still hung. Any ideas?

  41. Kilrah

    Working :)
The image was cropped at 2Gb for some reason. Downloaded another one and it’s OK. Running in native and safe mode, vmware 5 doesn’t want. Will have to try the dual boot now lol
sound, wireless and graphics card (intel integrated) not recognised. Impossible to configure the keyboard layout!

  42. Alle

I’m having the same problem as Dave and a few others. Seems to load then I get the multi-language screen telling me I need to restart the machine. Boot options no help.

    Any thoughts?

  43. Hek

Getting this error repeatedly: “Error parsing plist fileLoading Darwin/x86″

I’ve tried it on an external USB drive then also tried it by putting the same drive inside my laptop as my main drive.

Any suggestions? Can somebody send me a link to a known working image plz??

  44. Bry

The multi-language boot error was resolved for me by removing my ATI 9600 card and using the built-in video card; I noticed that at the Darwin screen the ATI card was recognized as only 16MB, so no real loss using motherboard video. Hope this helps Alle and others.

  46. Rasta

What size thumb drive do I need to install the image..?

  47. Alle

thanks Bry. My card is internal so I’ll have to wait.

  48. josh

i NEED HELP i am trying to install in on a paritioned HD and i keep getting the

    Copying CONIN$ to CONOUT$…

Then when I try to input the command “dd if=c:\tiger-x86-flat.img of=\\.\PhysicalDrive1″ (without the quotes of course), I get this message in return:

    F:\dd.exe:
    CONIN$ : Bad file descriptor

please what should i do?? I run it through dos I am all out of ideas.

  49. steve

My tiger-x86-flat.img is 2,096,624KB, why does no one else have this size?

Anyway, I use dd, but while booting I get:
“Error parsing plist FileLocation Darwin x86″

Anybody know anything about this? How to fix it?
is my image not the right one?

  50. Alex

Anyone who is having problems with the img size, what is the file system on the drive that has the image? If its FAT32, there’s a limit in what the file size is, which may cause problems. If its NTFS, no problems. Could be extraction problems too, try the latest version of WinRAR~www.rarsoft.com. All i can think of…I’m getting a multi language boot problem in VMWare, then again, i have a duron processor..didn’t think that’s a problem. All well :P

  51. funkyp

Ok so i am confused does this run on any hardware or only the intel mobo?
if only intel then you all got those boards and cpus quite quickly!!! please explain.

  52. Mike

Thanks for the instructions! It’s great to see such an eager community.

I’m running a Shuttle SN25P (AMD64 3500 Clawhammer, nForce4 chipset) and it’s not working. I’m going to get a new AMD64 with a Venice core and see if that will make any difference. Good luck, everyone!

  53. HekG

To everyone that was getting the error: “Error parsing plist fileLoading Darwin/x86″ like i was.

I got it working! All I did was re-wrote the img to my clean HD by using a different dd.exe found here: http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite/dd.htm

I then tried to to boot from my USB drive but kept getting the mac screen with the error: “you must restart”

Finally since I wasn’t able to boot off the usb drive, I just took the usb drive out of the case and installed it inside my Dell Inspiron 8600 as the primary drive and rebooted directly in OS X!

    This is awesome !!!

  54. generalstupid

what should the program say when it is supposed to be hanging? i can’t tell if it’s doing what it’s supposed to or didn’t work.

  55. eqd

has anyone gotten it to boot successfully from an external usb drive? the boot process i observe using one fails with kernel panic (in -v mode — or just the multi-language-restart in non -v mode) at trying to load the kexts related to the usb io kit.
    ?

Hi just wondering I got mactel from torrent link and inside I got the following files

    - mactelbase.tar around 3.9 gigs
    - texteditapp.tar

should I just unrar this file and just leave mactelbase.tar to use at point 2 or just unpack everything from inside mactelbase.tar

Thanks so much , sorry if what I asked was stupid.

  58. Luad

    Hey!
Works for me, I get in the osx system with the wonderful agua schemes.
But OSX don’t respond to my keyboard of mouse (all in ps2).
Somebody gets the same problem ?

  59. JEE

    I have a thinkpad R40

have dd the file to my USB drive, but i cant chose boot from USB drive i Bios.
The bios finds the drive but i cant select it.
Is there a way to make it boot from USB outside the bios?

  60. not_deadmoo

what is the admin password for deadmoo?

  61. Zanga

The installations works well… I chose a windows instalation, the boot in safemode works well, but I have some doubts:

1 - How I can do to make my 120gb remain the extra space after the IMG install? Or I can install by the Linux Distro option?
2 - How I can chance de curtis passoword? teh comand passwd curtis doesnt work for me!

  62. hellst0rm

to everyone getting the you must restart error try disabling acceleration in vmware… did it for me

  63. same question as Zanga…how do i change the password for curtis (deadmoo)? I tried booting with the -v switch but that just starts in diagnostic mode…but then it boots up normally to the desktop…i opened the terminal and ran

    sh /bin/sh
    passwd curtis
    *NEW PASS*

    and no luck :(

    cheers!

  64. nathan

no matter which dd ive used, the one on http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite/dd.htm

and the one from the guide i still get errors. the error i get from the dd from the guide is the bad file descriptor. the error i get from using the other dd is “error opening output file: 123 the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect”

could anyone help me please? it would be appreciated

  65. brian

how do you disable the acceleration in VMware? Is that a switch when you get the “boot: ” command line?

    me@briandichiara.com

  66. nathan

hey i got it working i used this commandline

    dd bs=1048576 if=C:\tiger-x86-flat.img of=\\?\Device\Harddisk1\Partition0

  67. rizzopro

    Hey All!!
Just got this going on a Dell 4700 Wooo Hooo
F****** Cool! Iam not sure if rosetta is working
or not…I only have 256Mb Ram…Itunes doent work
Any suggestions to get itunes working or see if
rosetta is wroking? Is an sse3 capable CPU.
Been trying to load apps..experimneting like hell!

  68. Zanga

I do the radical way to solve my problem. Put the Hd in external firewire case, and use my emac to reset de curtis password and enable root user… :-D
Works! The OS X 10.3 in my emac can see and accept the system like a equal!

But the OS just remain boot in safe mode. Someone have a trick to try make OS X running normal???

  69. FooBar

Ok, I’ve got it working almost on my Shuttle booting from a USB drive. Boots in safe mode but after Aqua starts my keyboard and mouse don’t work. Anyone resolve this problem?

To change the password you need to:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    /usr/libexec/register_mach_bootstrap_servers /etc/mach_init.d
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local &

Then use passwd to change the password.

    http://www.xplodenet.com/?p=guide

another guide that has proven useful in troubleshooting. VERY details and well written

  71. calier

works great for me !!! I got everything setup in half an hour :-)
For those who have a problem with Deadmoo’s password, here it is : “bovinity”.

Thanks for thr guide Dan !

  72. blaster

i downloaded that thing and I think mine says my processor is SSE. not sse2 or sse3. i guess that means it won’t work for me. It gets to the multilingual reboot error message and thats all.

  73. dane

    change password:

    bootoption: -s

    wait..

    # sh /bin/sh is wrong.. correct is..
    sh /etc/rc
    passwd curtis
    *newpass*
    passwd deadmoo
    *newpass*

  74. james

For those getting the must restart error i just plugged the drive directly as the primary master and it worked.. i get the multilanguage restart when trying to boot from usb.

  75. If you get “bad file descriptor” for the dd command, try using “sudo” in front of the dd. example:

    sudo dd bs=1048576 if=……..

got it working for me.. but kinda slow…

  76. NoVaSpY

This isn’t going to work for most of us. This is an image of an installed OS, not a OS install. Depending on what the owner’s hardware configuration was, we’d pretty much have to match him or we are going to get errors. When I activated -v, I could see the scan looking for GeForce stuff, I’m running ATI, that isn’t going to work. It seems the USB works, but my Keyboard is ps/2 and it didn’t work, I’ll bet the owner had a USB keyboard. When the OS detects hardware differences from when the image was taken, it doesn’t like it. I got into the login screen only once, wasn’t able to enter the found password. My Specs:
    AMD64 3000+ 1.8Ghz
1024 Dual Channel DDR 400Mhz RAM
    ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256Mb

Good Luck to all with it, I’ll wait til the actual install disc’s image is released, whenever that is…

  77. Vikram

Hello all! I don’t know which drive to dd the image to. Last time I tried this it WIPED OUT MY HARD DRIVE AT CORRUPTED WINDOWS! But now, I’m willing to give this another try. in WMI there is PHYSICALDRIVE0 and C. I tried PHYSICALDRIVE0 but that kinda corrupted Windows. I don’t see how this makes sense.

  78. joe

Worked ok on my Toshiba laptop.

how do you increase the space of the root partition? I have 55G free and would like to allocate it?

  79. Ch4d

password(s) are “bovinity” for both curtis and deadmoo

  80. the passwords for both user accounts are “bovinity”

  81. Katch

Easy as pie on my A64 3700+ San Diego. The image took about 15 minutes to write to the ropey Quantum Fireball 30Gb Drive (ironically pulled from an old G3 IMac) I had lying about. Booted straight up to OSX No problems :) wicked bit of work!

  82. Katch

So what about getting things like my USB Speedtouch 330 USB modem working and support for the AC97 soundcard that my motherboard uses?

I tried installing the speedtouch drivers as I would on a normal Mac and they wouldn’t work. I can’t get sound support at all and iTunes won’t run (for this reason I guess)

Also the OS X interface feels a little stuttery anyone else experiencing this?

    Hardware is AMD A64 3700 San Diego - 1Gb Ram - DFI S939 Ultra-D Mobo - Nvidia 6800U

Finally is there a good discussion forum anywhere to discuss development of this ported OS?

  83. Mac Dell

Works fine on a Dell gx-270 2.8 intel HT. It did not like the internal video card. The display was only a few colors. I put in an old gforce agp and now its perfect. Safari like to crash on some sites dont know if its just me. Also when I tryed it on a Dell gx260 3.6 intel no ht it would not get past the apple screen.

  84. frankenfruter

I am actually running it successfully on a Celeron 1.3 with 1 Gig Generic RAM. Runs choppy — obviously no drivers, etc.

  85. sarah

To the guys having problems with DD from Dos/Windows, you need to enter the entire command in one line at the C:> prompt. Typing ‘dd’ and hitting enter won’t work (get conin$ errors ‘cos it’s trying to read/write the console).

To the guys not finding hardware on their machines - not surprising, the hardware support in this image is limited. For e.g. the only wireless support is for the Apple Airport. Using Mac drivers won’t help because they’re PowerPC binaries, not Intel.

To the guys unable to run iTunes etc., this is also not surprising since these are PowerPC applications (even in this image) and cannot run on Intel. Check ‘Software’ in ‘System Profiler’ if you don’t believe me. Same goes for any Mac apps you try to install, like Photoshop. They just can’t run. Most of the iLife apps in the image are Intel-compatible, some aren’t (e.g. iTunes, DVD player).

Bottom line - follow the instructions PRECISELY and the image works on a lot of modern hardware and is really cool - but at this stage all you can do is play, explore and learn the nice Mac interface. You will have to wait until Mac/Intel apps are released to really use it.

Great work by the folks who wrote the instructions - this experience has been enormous fun! Thanks!

  86. Carlos

How can I get rosetta working? I have a P4 and it supports sse3. Do i just replace “CoreGraphics”? How can I replace the files I need to enable rosetta?

  87. Mikey

I think the lady is right. If the app is a native Power PC binary, it probably won’t work on x86. The OS has been ported but 3rd Party apps haven’t. Not sure if there’s a fix at Unix level or something to enable, I’m still digging around. I’d guess that people with more brains than me will have patches and fixes available soon.

  88. Borrow A Geek

just got it to work on a laptop dell inspiron 8500, widescreen. everything works natively in normal mode. audio, ethernet, video etc. id flawless and fast!

Dear microsoft, your day has come and goone, it has been nice knowing you (not), but you’re on the way OUT the monopoly door, dont let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.

  89. Tabha

    Hi,

I finally got OSX to boot, but as some people have said before it boots up, but then i get a yellow screen, and says i need to retart, then i tried -v and that didn’t work, it gets stuck at one point. I have ati radeon 9800 pro. I thinks that the problem

  90. jason

i keep getting a ” b0 error ” i have tried to install this on 2 different machines and keep getting the same error :( both are p4’s with plenty of ram etc
    any ideas

  91. zippedy

followed ytour instruction but you need to put

    dd bs=1048576 if=tiger-x86-flat.img of=\\.\PhysicalDrive#

    and it works just fine
    thanks for your advice.

  92. Hi, i installed it, it went find (i think), i boot up get to the logo (the bit where you get the spinny thingy on the macs) it then brings up a message that i need to restart, HELP

  93. Majin Buu

I was able to successfully install it on my second HD, and it works great. The OS is a little laggy (Intel Celeron 2.0 Ghz, nVidea 5800), and there is no sound, and no USB. I tried to install the motherboard package, but it wont take for the AC97 sound and the USB. My internet connection is also through a USB via a wireless hub adapter, and I suppose I need an actual ethernet cable for internet, right? Email me with some help on how to get sound and my USB device(s) to work. Otherwise, the guide worked very well for me, thanks.

  94. nAffie

Well, i got it working on my Dell Dimension 8300
Boots only in safe mode, iTunes ain’t workin’…
And i’m posting this messagen with Safari btw.. :D

For the peeps with the green restart message: try booting in safe mode: -x

    Thiz rulez.. :D

  95. LOOK, EVERYONE, IF YOU ARE NOT RUNNING THE SAME SPECS AS CURTIS/DEADMOO, DON’T EVEN BOTHER; YOU NEED AN NVIDIA CARD.

    Thanks.

  96. The Unknown

hi! I first also got the ‘plist error’, but realized, that the archive has not been properly unpacked. With new version of RAR everything was OK. Could start Mac OS via VMWare, but not via external harddrive (restart screen, even with the -x or -v option). Installing the drive in my laptop worked. Crazy! My laptop: IBM Thinkpad R51 1829-EHG. Any idea, how I get OS X working also from external harddisk???

  97. osxpc

    deadmoo’s password is:

VelvetNightmare has a point but he/she isn’t right about needing NVidia. This image runs perfectly on my HP zd8000 laptop (ATI graphics) and my IBM Thinkpad (also ATI). They’re identifed as bog-standard VGA 1024×768, but that’s OK for testing. Sound is fine on both machines too. Like I said before, iTunes in this image is a PowerPC binary not a hybrid so it won’t work on x86, and same goes for the DVD player. Don’t expect thse two apps to start up. Everything else in the OS is fine. I used the latest Stuffit on the PC to unpack everything so I didn’t get the archive problems that seem to be the root (no pun intended) of many ppl’s problems. Don’t be put off from testing, just be aware that some hardware may have problems with this image.

  99. Lui

How do you now when it has finish th copy?

  100. Bootsee

The installs on VMware to a direct drive works fine, so long as I load it in VMWare.
But as soon as i boot it native, it get “Still Waiting for Root Device”.

I have multiple drives on my mobo.
there 6 ide channels on the mobo (including SATA), plus 4 channels on a pci ata133 card, where the extra 60gig drive is.

    Anyone has a clue?

  101. Bootsee

If it installs correctly to a physical drive within VMWare, whether using PPC or a prebuilt image, and once booting natively, it hangs at (verbose) “still waiting for root device”, it may simply mean that your Harddrive is installed on a pci ata controller or the like, and Darwin doesn’t see the drive at boot.

One way to find out if Darwin sees the drive at boot, is to burn the darwin.iso to a cdrom, and boot the computer system with it (not in VMWare, but from the bios boot), when the install asks you what drive to install the root in, if it doesn’t show your drive in the list, there goes the error.

In this case, remove that drive from that controller and put it directly on the main IDE or SATA (yes SATA, mine seems to find my SATA drives) controllers, and then reboot, again with the darwin cd-rom, and see if now shows the drive.
If it does, reboot…before it starts, remove the cdrom, and let it boot to MacOS X

  102. RoyCD

No problems using Mac OSX86 on PC, though sound only goes through USB sound. Bu network OK, USB partly OK, can even run some native PPC software.

  103. Skinless

Haven’t seen anyone mention what the password for root is. So once you change the curtis passwd from bovinity to whatever, I would suggest typing “sudo su -” (without quotes) enter your new password and you will now be the root user. Then type “passwd” to change the root password.

  104. Bart

I want to put the image file on a separate USB drive. It is formatted and has 1 NTFS partition. Having no partition results in DD –list not recognizing the drive. I use the DD command but it doesnt seem to result in the image being copied. Can someone tell me if 1) the USB drive needs to formatted and 2) partitioned and 3) what file system (NTFS, FAT32, HFS+). How do you format a USB drive in HFS+ from a WinXP machine?
    Thanks!

  105. J10

I used the Chain0 loader to load the MAC partition without it I got the “HFS+ Partition Error”

  106. Cris

I have used the diskpart method of transferring the image, and then downloaded and configured the chain0 file, OS X booted, now I just need some speed tips, by the way for me when I booted with -x the comp just turned off. And for some reason it won’t remember my keyboard, it needs to be identified after every bootup. Pretty cool though, thanks deadmoo/curtis.

  107. jason

If you want to change the password for deadmoo, don’t bother with the command line, all you have to do is:
Apple -> System Preferences -> Users -> Click on the icon for the padlock -> enter deadmoo’s password when asked (bovinity) -> enter new password

As a long-time PPC Mac OS X user, welcome to the fold!

  108. ACD

For people with problems getting big enough external storage, get an old or redundant hard drive , formatted, (reasonable size) and get a USB to IDE adapter, most run at usb 2.0 and require no drive casing or power changer with fan, just a plug in adapter. much cheaper and easier to transport, i use it to format and repair faulty drives and extract files

  109. Naim

There are many things which have been said in this tutorial that can be disputed:

    You do not need VMware
    You do not need PearPC
You do not need a full harddrive
You do not need Linux. However, you need a working operating system, and if you start from scratch, a Linux Live CD is the shortest path to have one.

I followed the instructions here: http://wiki.radiotux.de/index.php/OSX86#Complete_tutorial_for_Newbies
and now I have Mac OS X and Windows on a dual-boot system on the SAME HARD DISK.

  110. Anders

So far I haven’t seen any reports of success on dual-core pentium d. Anyone any experience or knowledge if os x works on the dual-cores at the moment?

  111. mikel

I’m spanish and my tiger file from bittorrent is different it has carpet well one it’s name is mactel is that the image there are 2 rar what should i do is the same question that a guy did 2 weeks ago but he hadn’t answer can you explain it now i can’t find another torrent file without the same thing thank you before nothing

  112. Cassie

Why do people keep saying stuff won’t run since it is ppc? This image has Rosetta like any other OS X x86 install. You just need a CPU with SSE3 or some ‘modifications’ in other cases.

Also, the deadmoo one is sort of kludged and doesn’t include the proper CoreGraphics file for things and you’d need the original.

It works on a dual-core system but you have to edit kext files (for ICH7).

Has anyone gotten it to boot fine of an external USB2 drive though?

  113. phil

Yes, native PPC apps run with this image (MS Office, etc.). The tiger-x86 image as distributed did not work for me until I installed the v0.5c combined SSE2 and anti-TPM patch (see http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=1909). I also am booting it from an external USB2 drive. Works great!

  114. Tommy

Hjelp… I need help… Can anybody tell me the requirements for install the osx?

  115. Miss KIKI

    Hello!
The multi-language boot error was resolved for me by removing my ATI 9600 card and using the built-in video card; I noticed that at the Darwin screen the ATI card was recognized as only 16MB, so no real loss using motherboard video… Hope this helps Alle and others.

    …. i have a acer extensa 4100 with ati X600 graphics.

Installed on Dell Dimension 8400. Hangs on the apple screen showing a circle with a slash through it. I believe the problem is the ATI x300 video card. I will try a different one then post again. Got the best info from http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Index.php/Install_On_A_Simple_And_Accurate

  121. stormin

ok I got it working on my Dell Demension 8400 *ONLY IN SAFE MODE* I had the message “Still waiting for root device” to get past that I had to boot into bios and under “Drives” then “SATA Operation” I had to change “RAID Autodetect / AHCI” to “RAID Autodetect / ATA” When I try to boot normally I get “Waiting for remote debugger connection. kdp_poll: no debugger device” Will update if I get it working.

  122. stormin

Boots normally now on my Dell Demension 8400 P4 ATI x300. I had to delete all the ATI extensions from “system”"library”"Extensions” to boot normally without panic.

  123. yo fuckfaces it’s a 6GB image.

  124. machater

    hey guys,
are you all nuts, running a mac on your PC. Mac is the most useless OS I ever used. leave your PC’s alone. Forget about this Mac shit. If it is a good OS it should have become more popular than windows now.

  131. Joseph

Working FLAWLESSLY on a Gateway 550GR/Pentium 4 3.2Ghz (SSE3) with GMA900 and 1.5GB RAM. Starts in 3.5 seconds from bios to login! Dashboard even does the nifty ripple effect (and it looks even better than the one on my REAL mac!) Also did the VMWare Image Expand trick for full drive use. It even burns DVDs from iDVD! Amazing! You need SSE3 to really see the best performance and usability though.

  132. mixx

got a problem with the restart screen, im trying everything you guys said here. thanks for the tut/tips :D

  133. FunkyCatSpangky

This small tutorial will help you to install on a PC with a processor INTEL or AMD the famous operating system of APPLE Mac OS X I think that this tutorial must be very complete because I carried it out with the manners simplest to carry out all the operations and I took as a starting point several English sites.

    Remote loading:

The image of Mac OS X x86 (Version 10.4.1) for x86. This image is in the form of tar file. You will be able to find the file on all the Peer-To-Peer networks in the form of:

    - tiger-86.tar.bz2: This file - of 1.29 Go - in is made the image of VMware (software of emulation) of Mac OS X x86. In this file you will find the file of 5.99 Go named tiger-x86-flat.img it is EC file which contains Mac OS X86.

    Material + Software required:

A hard disk in IDE of a minimum capacity of 10 Go. (20Go recommended)
An operating system déja installed on another disc (Microsoft® Windows® XP Pro or Home)
    Mac Drive 6 Free Trial … :: Download::…
    dd for Windows …:: Download::…
    WinRAR 3.51 …:: Download::…
    Preparation with the instalation:

    1. Décompressez the file tiger-x86.tar.bz2 using the WinRAR software.
    2. Copy the file - that you come from décompresser - tiger-86-flat.img to the root of the hard disk C: / (root = Double-clike on the icone in the Working station)
    3. Copy the files dd.exe and Diskio.dll with the root of C: /
    4. Carry out cmd (To start, Executer…, and type cmd then insert Enter)
    5. Type - to have easier, I go type the orders which you will have to insert between guillements (”test”), you suspect biensûr that they will have to be removed - “diskpart”
6.Ensuite once diskpart initialized, type “list disk”
    7. A list of all your disks hard appears retain well the number of the disc or you wish to install Mac OS X x86.
    8. Type “exit”

    Preparation of the hard disk:

To be able to install Mac OS X, you must have a hard disk formatted with the filing system of Mac OS X (the HFS+), MacDrive 6 allows to do it since Windows. MacDrive 6 does not create in made q’ a partition on this disc or formatte a whole disc you will choose in the assistant.

    1. Executez MacDrive 6
    2. Click on Partition has mac HardDisk.
    3. Follow the assistant and partitionnez your disc.

Copy image of Mac OS X x86 from the Hard Disk:

I have a couple of questions that I would be really greatful if people would either post here or email me with answers to. I’m not a computer expert…….I know much more than the average person about them, but for instance I can’t write computer codes besides html and javascript. That said, what software/download do I need to be able to double boot Mac OSX on an Intel Pc machine, and after I do that how do I get them up and running? Also, when I do that will Mac OSX function exactly the same as if it were run on a Mac, or will it have certain problems (like recognizing usb and firewire inputs)? I would be most grateful if someone who knows a lot more about computers than I do would write me back. Thanks

  140. Patrick295767 if you haven’t been able to locate it via torrent, shoot me an email and I’ll put it up for you.

    Hi there,
    Thailand rules!!
I managed to make a Benq Joybook S73G-M17 Run OSX tiger Universal
and it all works well. The build in DVD-Dual DVD-RW works fine with toast.
Some Thai friend of me converted dual core intel OS linux into an OSX tiger with ease. It will only run native though. So no more XP in the way.
The start up is a bit slow, but once it runs, i can work with Apple studio PRO universal faster then with a MACBOOK PRO!!
I spend only 47.000 baht for this baby including the OSX, that is around 900 euro for the fastest MACBOOK PRO with an T2400 Processor and 2.5GB mem.
We will set up a website soon, on which we can provide these tranformations in Thailand only.
    So please be patient.

I have a friend in northeast Toronto who had files recovered from his crashed eMac OSX on a new external USB2 hard drive. He has an old Mac that runs only OS9, but it cannot mount the new external drive. He has also bought a new PC laptop, which he likes, but he needs the old files (no back-up). If there is someone who can get his machine to read the old files or otherwise assist for a reasonable fee, let me know. He would buy another Mac but has been hosed by a former Mac salesman/fanboy, so would like to get off that boat.

in -v option .. but.. after few seconds.. its appears Waiting for ROOT device..
Can anyone tell me what is the root device? tanx to rply me on narle69@hotmail.com

This is from linux. the root device is where the lowest level of the filesystem is located (/). In this case, it should be your dvd drive, and this indicates that the installer is having difficulty reading the DVD (why, i can’t say)

Has anyone figured out the “You must restart your computer” screen issue? I’ve tried -v and -x, and a combination of the two and it either hangs up on a line about some debugger or goes straight to the reboot screen.

    Thanks in advance.

    To RC.Griff:
I Had the same problem, then i realised that my computer did not have SSE3, im pretty sure you need this to run OSX…
if you;re running windows try CPUID to check
