Get your Fring on - A real mobile VoIP solution for your cellphone

…as long as it is a Nokia. But don’t worry that will change.

If you are a fan of Skype, it is easy to get frustrated by the companies mobile offerings. With official support only for the Windows Mobile platform, all other handsets have been left out (Don’t get Derek or I started about a PalmOS client). The hacks don’t work either, forget about Eqo, it hardly works. You need a PC (or Mac) online all the time to act as a bridge, and I don’t even need to mention its patchy functionality.

Fring is a breath of fresh air, because it simply works.

Fring supports both Skype and Google Talk on your mobile phone, with no need for additional hardware or a PC in between. It is about a 7 minute install, which starts off with a Text from Fring with a download link. When the installer is done with its thing, the Skype contacts list appears and I was ready to chat, or Skype Out.

There is no charge, yet, for this service, just your 3G data plan cost.

I had an opportunity to play with this on a Symbian Series 60 phone, and I must say I was impressed. But I can’t begin to express that a 3G network is required, anything less then EDGE will result is horrific call quality if the program works at all.

So if you are fortunate to have a Symbian Nokia phone, this program really rocks!
